The Lady Moudbuilders golf team teed off the spring season in San Antonio, placing sixth in a seven-team tournament on at the Bellevue Spring Break Classic. The tournament began on Friday and ended Saturday.
Abby Bertholf, biochemistry junior, scored a team-low 161 and shot 15-over-par, which tied her for 17th in the tournament. There were 40 golfers altogether.
“As a unit, we hit the ball really well,” said Tim Jasper, head women’s golf coach. “I was particularly pleased with the way we played through adversity. Weather prevented us from not being able to practice much leading up to this tournament, but that did not keep the us from performing well.”
The weather was a factor during the tournament. The heat was something that Southwestern is not accustomed to this time of the year. This weather change made both days a grueling physical challenge for all the golfers.
“There was not one particular hole that troubled us,” said Meagan Brady, business administration junior. “The last three holes were the most challenging because of the focus that was needed for them. Two full days in hot weather forces you to dig deep and stay on task.”
Ottawa University and Oklahoma Wesleyan University were also at the tournament. The Lady Moundbuilders bested Ottawa, which was a goal going into the tournament.
“Throughout the tournament, Abby and Meagan’s play really stood out,” said Reid Green, religion and philosophy junior. “Coach challenged us to beat the other team’s in our conference and they really stepped up to the challenge.”
Southwestern made adjustments during the tournament due to weather and course type. With the first tournament of the spring season under wraps, the Lady Moundbuilders have some issues to tweak, but they have plenty of time to get it done.
“Going into the next tournament, we need to work on our putting,” Bertholf said. “Even though we have had a limited number of practices, I believe that we will make small tweaks and come into next tournament better than ever.”
