“Where were you when you found out Kobe Bryant died?” Much like when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, this tragic death shocked the nation, as well as the world. TMZ first reported the news at 11:24 a.m., and then confirmed at 1:24 p.m. ET.

Saturday, LeBron James passed Kobe Bryant for third on the all-time scoring list in the NBA. As a result, Bryant was already in the news. This made it hard to believe when it was first reported that Bryant had passed away in a helicopter crash outside of Los Angeles.

Although the tragic news was first reported by TMZ, soon other news outlets began reporting and confirming the story, such as CNN, ESPN, and Fox Sports.

While the main storyline for all of these reports have been the same, the details as to who else was on board varied wildly. Most of the earlier reports suggested that Bryant’s wife and children were not present with him. However, it was later reported and confirmed that his 13-year-old daughter Gianna was on board the fatal crash as well.

Bryant inspired a generation with his determination and sheer-mindedness both on and off the court. From yelling “Kobe!” when throwing something in the trash can, to referencing the “Mamba Mentality.” Bryant’s impact on this generation rivals that of Michael Jordan’s impact on the previous generation.

The confirmation of this tragic news ruined the day, if not the week, of millions of Americans. From celebrities, to ex-athletes, to random high school students, millions paid tribute to the deceased NBA legend in their own way

One important aspect of this remorseful situation that must not be overlooked is the remaining members of Bryant’s family. Their lives and futures were changed in an instant.

Regardless of how much you knew about Bryant and his Hall of Fame career, we can all agree to lift up our thoughts and prayers for the Bryant family and close friends. Rest in peace to a role model of millions, a loving father, and an incredible basketball player. Rest in peace Kobe Bryant.
