The Lady Moundbuilder golf team placed 4th in a five-team tournament on Tuesday at the Eagle Spring Classic. The tournament was held in Broken Arrow, Okla. at Battle Creek Golf Club.

Abby Bertholf, biochemistry junior, scored a team-low 154 and shot 10-over-par, which tied placed her 2nd in the tournament. There were 24 golfers altogether.

“I was proud of all of our golfers posting season-low scores for a round,” said Tim Jasper, head women’s golf coach. “Seeing everyone come together and have exceptional days on the course was exciting for the whole team.”

Despite the weather affecting play, the Lady Moundbuilders stayed on top of tough holes and kept focus for the duration of the tournament.

“Broken Arrow received some pretty heavy rainfall on Saturday,” said Meagan Brady, business administration junior. “We did an excellent job staying clear of muddy fairways that would make the course longer than it needed it be.”

The Lady Moundbuilder’s golf team is unique because they only have four golfers. This leaves little room for error when competing in tournaments. With schools that have larger teams, the room for error is cushioned.

“Having less golfers puts a lot of pressure on the team,” Jasper said. “Nobody can take a day off and expect great team scores in return.”

The only other conference team competing was Oklahoma Wesleyan. Seeing out-of-conference teams is key to figuring out how Southwestern stacks up with competition outside of the KCAC.

It also helps the team figure out tweaks they need to make for the critical competitions that are coming soon. Southwestern’s next competition is the Moundbuilder Spring Classic, which will be played at home.

“The name of the game is all about consistency,” Bertholf said. “Repetition of shots and slowing the game down one shot at a time is how this team will be successful. When our focus is unbreakable, we are a hard team to beat.”
