Local healthcare professionals will discuss general healthcare, men’s and women’s sexuality and mental health at a conference Monday evening.

The biology education outreach team is hosting the Health and Wellness Conference 6.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on March 11 in Mossman 101.

Tamara McEwen, assistant professor of biology, said, “This conference will focus on health issues that are specific to college students.”

“There’s going to be some different sessions. One of them will just be general health issues. We are also going to is focus on mental health and some sexual health issues,”said McEwen.

The biology education outreach team working on this conference includes Rutendo Jokomo, biology senior. Sydnee Nelson, biochemistry senior. Sara Peck, biology sophomore. Jessica Arnoldy, biology freshman. Mariam Mamah, biology senior.

Jokomo said, “We are going to talk about general health care and in that session we are going to be talking about the health care facilities or options that are available to students in Winfield.”

Jokomo said, “We will also talk about mental health and coping with the stress a lot of students face here at school. Basically a lot health issues face college students directly.”

McEwen said, “We feel like maybe they are services available that students don’t know about and there are health issues that students have that they are too shy or too embarrassed to ask for help with. So we are going to let them know what is.”

Nelson said, “When we started talking about it, we felt that the school has a lot of opportunities for us to get help, to make sure that we are healthy and safe but we don’t advertise it very well so we really wanted to an opportunity to extend that to students.”

The purpose of the conference is to provide information regarding health issues to students. “We no longer have a campus nurse. Students may not know where they need to go if they are sick or if they maybe feeling depressed or if they just have concerns,” said McEwen.

Nelson said, “This conference is to get information to students about health issues that could be general health issues, like getting the flu, or even sexual or mental issues, like depression or suicide.”

The conference is new. McEwen said, “It is Rutendo Jokomo’s idea. She kind of dreamed it up and she’s done most of the organizing and has gotten the other students involved in the planning and organization, and has taken care of the details for that.”

Jokomo said, “This is the first time we are doing something like this. Hopefully it won’t be the last. It depends on the response we get out of it.”

There are four biology professors are working with the team. Charlie Hunter, professor of biology. Rick Cowlishaw, associate professor of biology. Patrick Ross, professor of biology and McEwen.

Jokomo said, “This is first big event with college students. Our job is to teach people to love life and science and we thought this would maybe be a cool way of doing that.”

McEwen said, “The team is hoping for 50 to 75 students. We hope to have a pretty big crowd a general session. Then we will break them out to a session for males and a session for females.”

Jokomo said, “This is the first time done like this. we are going to use that as a gauge for events we have in the future.”

Dalton Carver
News and Opinion editor

Bring Me the Horizon may have to find a new name. They’ve not only found the horizon; they’ve exceeded it.

The British metalcore outfit started their journey to the great yonder with their first album, “Count Your Blessings.” They’ve climbed their highest peak with their latest release, “Sempiternal.” Progression is not a strong enough word for the transformation this band has made.

BMTH are still expressing the same anger and angst as on their previous albums. They’ve just found a better way to deliver it. I can’t express how much their writing has improved since “Count Your Blessings.” With lines like “Go to hell, for heaven’s sake,” and “When you die, the only kingdom you’ll see is two foot wide and six foot deep,” you wouldn’t even recognize them as the same band.

With the previous lyric examples, the band has continued their themes from their last album, “There Is a Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven Let’s Keep It a Secret,” which includes death and religion. It seems that Oliver Sykes, the vocalist, is fighting a constant, back-and-forth battle between belief and atheism. It’s intriguing to listen to. These topics are ones that most bands would struggle with expressing, but BMTH nail them.

Sykes’ distinct scream has only become more so, and it’s much more understandable than any of his previous efforts. His shrieks have attained musicality and flow, and he even sings on some of the songs. This is a complete change of pace from previous albums, where the band would normally feature Josh Franceschi of You Me at Six for the melodic portions. It’s an incredible transformation from what Sykes used to be.

Musically, they’ve completely lost their grindcore elements. This is a good thing. The only element that set BMTH apart from other bands upon the release of “Count Your Blessings” was Sykes’ high-pitched screams. Now, almost everything they do accomplishes this. The majestic sound they created on their last album has become even more grandiose and captivating. They’ve completely grown out of the scene they started in.

Their lead single, “Shadow Moses,” is the best song on the album, but no song seems to have been just tossed in. Other songs that I particularly enjoyed include “The House of Wolves” and the angry “Antivist.”

I never would have foreseen BMTH taking this direction, but I’m ecstatic they did. Even if you don’t like hardcore music or you have no idea who BMTH are, I would recommend this album to you. It’s incredibly accessible, while maintaining the quality of being unique. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a metalcore album, but you’ll headbang while you ponder thoughtfully about the deep subjects thrown from Sykes’ throat.

Although the album officially drops April 1, the band is streaming the full length for a limited amount of time. You can listen to and pre-order “Sempiternal” here.

Bailey VenJohn
Staff reporter

Not many people can say that they have stood up and protested something that they believe is wrong. A few Southwestern students are about to get just that opportunity this weekend.

The TransCanada XL Pipeline is a project that has been in action since 2010. It is an export pipeline. Gulf Coast refiners want to refine the cheap Canadian crude into diesel and other products.

The pipeline already stretches from oil sand fields in Alberta, Canada to Cushing, Oklahoma but the company, TransCanada, is looking to expand.
The new expansion will add 1,700 miles to the pipeline and it would be in two sections of expansion. The first would connect Cushing, Oklahoma to the Gulf Coast of Texas. The second would be from Alberta, Canada to Kansas. It will cross 6 states including Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

There are many opinions, both positive and negative, surrounding this idea. The Forward on Climate rally is a protest against the expansion of the pipeline. On Sunday the 17th at noon, the protestors will surround the White House.

Last year the rally brought in 15,000 people. The expansion of the pipeline is to cross international borders, therefore TransCanada needs to obtain a Presidential Permit through the State Department. The rally was a success last year and Obama delayed the pipeline.

Charlie Hunter, biology professor, is attending the rally. He and his wife started speaking out against the pipeline a couple years ago and his wife actually attended this rally last year.

Hunter said “It’s the source that’s the problem, burning tar sands is one of the dirtiest forms of fossil fuel. The amount of CO2 that is released if it is burned, could potentially create quite a bit of havoc with problems related to global warming.”

Another problem Hunter acknowledged was that over 70% of the oil will be exported overseas to Europe and China, which really doesn’t alleviate problems here.

Sally McGuire, liberal arts and sciences senior, is excited to attend the protest. She said she has been to another protest while she was in D.C. for an internship.

This protest has potential to be unlike any other before. It could possibly be the biggest environmental protest in history.

McGuire said she has known about the pipeline for some time, “when I heard that I had the opportunity to go I was like of course.”

Paying for this out of her own pocket is evidence that McGuire really is invested. “The bus company actually offers a discounted bus fare for low income students” said McGuire.

A main concern of McGuire’s is that it would cross the Ogallala Aquifer. This is a giant freshwater aquifer that is used for water supply, mostly irrigation but also drinking water. The pipeline has the potential, that if it were to spill oil, it could contaminate a lot of water.

Winfield Friends of the Environment group was started by Lynne Hunter, Charlie’s wife. The group is made of mostly retired Winfield citizens. Rick Cowlishaw, biology professor, is a member of Winfield Friends of the Environment.

Cowlishaw said that the group meets once a month and just talks about what is environmentally affecting the community at the time. Sometimes they bring in people from the water plant and other local places to talk about what’s going on. The pipeline is one issue that the group is focusing on now because as Cowlishaw said “It is going to pass through our back yard.”

McGuire said she wishes she could be a part of Winfield Friends of the Environment, but because of when they host their meetings in doesn’t work with her schedule.

Natalie Jones, pre-med biology freshman, found out about the trip in a Green Team meeting.

She hasn’t ever protested before so this will be a new experience.

“I got a scholarship so I don’t have to pay for the bus trip” said Jones. She also said she didn’t really know where the scholarship came from but that “Lynne Hunter offered it because they had extras.”

Originally I just wanted to go because “Honestly it’s a trip to D.C.” said Jones. After being offered the scholarship and deciding to attend, Jones has become more interested in the topic.

The main problem I have against it and why I want to partake is because the residents of Kansas didn’t get the chance to fight it. “The land that it is going on is all private so we didn’t get the right to speak out against it” said Jones.

The group that is going to Washington D.C. this weekend is hoping to get a positive outcome. Either way, this will be a great opportunity for those students to stand up for something they believe is wrong.

For the third year in a row Leadership has conducted a Road Race. Saturday April 14, is when the event will be held. A host of students and faculty as well as people from the community will run/walk a mile or a certified 5k course. The 5k will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 1 mile will begin at 9:15 a.m. It costs 20 dollars for entry fees for the 5k and 12 dollars for the 1 mile. The money that is made will go toward their budget which will help them carry out many community servie projects and go on service learning trips.

Being a fairly new fundraiser, students in Leadership are still figuring out the kinks. “We have the easy part taken care of,” said Hannah Podschun, English education junior, she is one of the coordinators for this event. She said making brochures and posters is already taken care of, which was the least of her worries. “It is hard to find a place to run, not only because we have to find a place that is safe and a place that will be easy to shut down, but we have to work with the police department and that can make it a little difficult at times,” said Podschun.

“I have been going on bike rides with my GPS to find a route as well,” said Kaley Rodriguez, elementary education junior, who is the other coordinator for this event. “We still do not have a route, but we are working on one.” She said she is very excited for this event because it has been a great turn out in the two previous years. “At this moment we have about 20 people signed up for the run, but we usually get more in the last week.”

Last year there were about 30 runners so they have set a goal for at least 50 runners for this year. They encourage runners to get creative with their running attire. Prizes will be awarded to individuals as well as groups. “We want to help build a bond between students and the community,” said Rodriguez. Leadership wants to help give back, as well as promote a healthy lifestyle.

Kaydee Johnson, business administration senior, is this year’s Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference NAIA Dr. Leroy Walker Champions of Character Award recipient for golf.

Kaydee Johnson, business administration senior, is this year’s Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference NAIA Dr. Leroy Walker Champions of Character Award recipient for golf. As the KCAC Conference representative, she will now be considered for the National NAIA Dr. Leroy Walker Champions of Character Award.

The selection criteria includes academic achievement; campus and community leadership; embracing the five core character values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative (Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, Sportsmanship); athletic achievement, and future ambition.

Johnson has participated in women’s golf all fours years at Southwestern. She has earned numerous awards on and off the golf course. She has been an NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete twice, a Southwestern College Presidential Scholar, Kansas State Scholar, Student Government Senator of the Month, Southwestern College Senior Class President, a member of Leadership Southwestern, and a volunteer for children’s church at First United Methodist Church in Winfield.

“I truly feel honored to have been selected as a nominee for the Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Award,” Johnson says. “I think this award is a good indicator of the NAIA’s commitment to improving student athletes in a way that translates beyond athletic performance and competition. As NAIA athletes we are encouraged to become better all around individuals; the NAIA Division pushes us to be, ‘Champions of Character.’”

Head coach Brad Sexson was elated about her selection.

“I am delighted that Kaydee received the NAIA – KCAC Dr. Leroy Walker Champions of Character Award,” Sexson says. “It is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to coach such a well-rounded student-athlete. Her efforts on the golf course, in the classroom, and in the community are exceptional. Kaydee truly leads by example. I am very proud of her.”

Dr. Leroy Walker is President Emeritus of the United States Olympic Committee and served as president through the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games. Dr. Walker is a graduate of Benedict College (S.C.) and is a former president of the NAIA.

“I am so proud to have been a part of the women Moundbuilder’s golf team for four years now,” Johnson says. “During my time with the team I have had many memorable rounds and I have helped our team place on many occasions, but I have never won a tournament as an individual. So to be selected for this award, based on my character and not purely on my performance as an athlete, is such an honor and I am so thankful to Southwestern College and to our Conference for their nomination.”

Johnson, a 2007 Winfield High School graduate, is the daughter of Larry and Linda Johnson, Winfield.
