Staff reporter

“We’re hopeful that a community health center can be established. It’s just a question of when,” said David Brazil, liaison for the board of health, administrator REHS.

If it comes into being it will be named the community health center of Cowley County.

It will impact low-income people, those who are uninsured, underinsured and underserved.

Alan Polen is president of the board of directors for the proposal and a retired Methodist pastor.

After Polen retired he wanted to do something that made a difference. He said, “I’ve had a compassion for people and I feel that’s a calling.”

The process started in 2005 when Cowley County completed its strategic plans through Cowley First and Cowley County Vision 20/20.

The community was surveyed to see what people thought was needed. In a scale from one to 100, with one being the best and 100 being the worst Cowley County rated just about 80 in health care needs.

The results were clear. Brazil said, the need for access to primary care is overwhelming in the county.

“Essentially 15-16 percent of our county in uninsured and another 12 to maybe 15 percent, based on the numbers you look at, are underinsured. Between the two you’ve got 25 to 30 percent of the county that cannot get access to primary care doctor,” said Brazil.

Polen said “If they get a prescription they may not have resources to buy the prescription even though the doctors give them prescriptions.”

The proposed low cost health center will have connections to resources that provide assistance.

Polen said the health center has two aims, “Accessible and affordable health care for those who can’t afford and where it’s not easily accessible.”

A 501-C3 non-profit corporation has been formed. The board of nine directors finished the planning grant in November of 2012 and moved on to a new access point application.

They should hear back from the federal government by this fall on whether or not they will get the award.

Community health centers are modeled in a holistic management of personal health.

Brazil said that health clinics build slowly. The need in Cowley County is so great that he predicts it will grow at a rapid pace.

“Most community health centers, once they are established, even in rural areas, outgrow their facility in three or four years and have to expand,” said Brazil.

While this is the first proposed health clinic for Cowley County, arkcity.net reported that there are several in Kansas.

Brazil said the closest ones to Cowley County are in Wichita. “The three I can think of are Grace Med, Guadalupe, and Hunter.”

The other health center board members are Kounh Astrab, Bruce Blake, Paulin Conde, Joy Kennedy, Grace Nichols, David A. Seaton, Kathy Wohlgemuth, Jeff Wood and Judith Zaccaria.

Staff reporter

Just like the rest of the season, weather dictated the conference tournament moving games from Topeka to Fun Valley park in Hutchinson, and pushing the start time back from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Builders came into the conference tournament with a 5-11 conference record putting them as the sixth seed taking on the three seed, Kansas Wesleyan the first round.

Southwestern struggled to get the bats going against the Coyotes only mustering six hits, two of which came from Audrey Vorderlandwehr, sophomore first baseman.

Kansas Wesleyan scored three runs in the second on four hits, including a double, and an error, in the bottom of the fourth inning to jump to a five run lead. The Coyotes scored two more times in the fifth to extend the lead to seven.qx

After losing to Kansas Wesleyan, the Builders would be forced to face the University of Saint Mary in the first game in the loser’s bracket of the double elimination tournament.

The Builders got the bats going early. Southwestern scored six times in bottom of the first.

Three Builders had a multi-hit game. Devan Howard, junior outfielder, Sara Blackburn, junior outfielder, and Shelby Tucker, sophomore utility, all had two hits in the game.

There were only two Builders that entered into the game that did not get a hit.

Southwestern would score another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and ultimately win the game 7-2 to advance.

A change in the bracket left the Builders playing top seeded Friends rather than Kansas Wesleyan again.

Friends was coming off their first loss to a conference opponent this season, after losing to Ottawa 3-2.

The Builders were able to get a double play in the bottom of the first to get out of an early jam, with a runner in scoring position.

An RBI double scored the first run of the game for the Falcons in the bottom of the second. A set of back-to-back RBI doubles came later in the inning giving Friends an early 3-0 lead.

The bottom of the third seemed to be more of the same for the Faclons scoring five times on four hits and three walks, to extend their lead to 8-0.

That’s how the game would finish.

The Builders did not have the bats working in their favor. Kylea Wilson, sophomore shortstop, and Megan Walentynowicz, freshman third baseman, recorded the only hits for Southwestern in the game.

After the loss, the Builders were eliminated from the conference tournament.

Southwestern ended the season with a record of 16-24, and 6-12 against conference opponents.

The rest of the conference tournament will take place tomorrow, May 5.

Staff reporter

As the end of the year draws close, I’ve been thinking about what I’ve learned in my first year of college. While I learned the ins and outs of AP style in journalism, the meaning of the word ‘petrichor’ and how Nathaniel Hawthorne used symbolism in his works, I have also figured out something much more important: that life is not a spectator sport.

Ferris Bueller put it best when he said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it!”
I’ve found out you can’t just wait around and expect something great to happen to you. You have to go out and seize every opportunity you can get. Don’t be so busy going nowhere fast that you miss the chances that are right in front of you.

I don’t know about you, but I struggled to pay attention to what’s went on around me. I was always too busy figuring out what I need to do next or getting to class that I didn’t take any opportunities to break my routine. By the end of the day I was so exhausted that I didn’t want to do anything else. I guess I could blame the stress of the day for my lack of caring, but it was also just so much easier to stick to routine.

Near the end of last semester, I had a revelation: what’s the point of hating what I was doing every day? Life isn’t for just shuffling through, I mean, what’s the point of that? So I decided to do something completely off-the-wall in the next semester, just to shake things up. After all, as said in ‘The Princess Diaries’, “The brave to not live forever but the cautious do not live at all.”

On a wild hare, I joined an improvisational acting class and a stained glass class. Both have provided great ways for me to expand my knowledge and sharpen skills that I hadn’t used before. They also gave me the opportunity to escape from the hum-drum monotony of regular schoolwork. I also took up baking over the breaks I got, and discovered that I love it; enough that I’ve decided to make a career of it.

I suppose my point is this: if there is something you want to try, now is the time to do it. If you want to learn Chinese, travel to New Zealand or learn to play violin, go for it. Does a philosophy class intrigue you? Try it out. College is an excellent time to pick up new skills, and who knows? It might even lead you to a career you had never thought of before.

Now is the best time, or as Alice Morse Earl (and the turtle from ‘Kung Fu Panda’) puts it, “The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it is called the present.”

Even if it leads to only being a hobby, or just a tale to tell around the holidays, it’s worth it. You just might find your true calling or simply pick up a neat skill. Whether you fail or succeed, it’s absolutely worth trying if you can say “I was actually brave enough to try that”.

After all, as the wise Doctor once said, “We’re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?”
Staff reporter

As a relatively rabid fan of British television, and an avid bibliophile to boot, you can safely assume that if a book shows up in a British show, I’m going to read it. This was the case with ‘Summer Falls’ by Amelia Williams.

The short e-book follows the adventures of a young girl named Kate Webster, who is endearingly headstrong and independent. She had recently moved to the seaside town of Watchcombe with her mother, and is trying to make the most of the last week of summer holiday.

Her summer is uneventful until she discovers a strange seascape painting in the local thrift shop. Sinister forces seem to be connected to the painting, and she soon figures out that it’s a puzzle that, once solved, will release the Lord of Winter from his slumber. It’s not until her neighbor’s (an odd, but friendly museum owner who calls himself ‘the Curator’) magic talking cat pieces part of it together that the implications of what the Lord of Winter is are clear.

Overnight, every adult in Kate’s village disappears, and a heavy snow coats the entire town. Now Kate must figure out a way to stop the Lord of Winter from rising, with help from the son of an ostracized pharmacist and a tremulous little boy.

However, someone is desperately trying to wake the Lord of Winter and bring about his everlasting reign of snow. Kate has to keep whoever it is from retrieving the other piece to the puzzle at all costs, but doesn’t even know where to begin looking. There is also a traitor in the midst.

This was a sweet story, and definitely meant for readers younger than me, but I liked it all the same. It starts off a little slow, but picks up the pace towards the end. I definitely enjoyed having a strong girl protagonist for once.

The book was mentioned in the ‘Doctor Who’ episode ‘The Bells of Saint John’, and a bit of a spinoff of the show. It becomes plain, as the story progresses, who a certain ‘Curator’ actually is. I loved coming across references from the quirky show, and any part with the Curator I could easily imagine Matt Smith’s character saying in the show.

I think ‘Summer Falls’ is a nice read, and if you’re a fan of ‘Doctor Who’, a story you can’t go wrong with, since it’s very cheap. If you were wondering if Clara was right about chapter 11 being the best, buy the book and see for yourself. Personally, I preferred 10.

If you know me at all, then you know I don’t know the first thing about sports, but I seem to know enough to enjoy watching sports movies. So, I decided to check out ‘42’

’42’ is based on the true story of the baseball star Jackie Robinson’s career. It follows the ups and downs of his life, the joys and struggles of the first African American major league baseball player.

For me, the movie wasn’t just about baseball; instead, it was more about segregation and racism and those who tried to overcome both.

The historical details of ‘42’ helped make it more real. Set in 1947, the film pulls off a swanky vibe, and really brings the postwar Golden Era to life. The costumes and settings were fun to see.

There are plenty of game scenes, but clipped, and never stagnant. There is also a fair amount of humor in ‘42’, that definitely helps keep the drama from becoming overwhelming. However, what really gives life to the movie is the actors.

I enjoyed Harrison Ford’s performance the most. He is lovable, in a cantankerous, gruff way, with his dry humor and growly voice. As the cigar-chomping Branch Rickey, his life is driven by the sport he loves, and he is willing to put his neck on the line in order to get his way.

Chadwick Boseman also shines in the part of Jackie Robinson. He’s gutsy, and struggles to keep back his temper as others heckle him. He plays the part well, and caused me to shake my head whenever the crowds booed him or other players jeered at him.

Overall, it was a nice movie, but not a particularly memorable one. It didn’t quite have the emotional pull of ‘The Blind Side’, but definitely had more poignant actors. If you’re looking for a sports movie with a bit of heart and drama, you could do worse than ‘42’.

Finals week is a stressful time for everyone. Add having to move out of your dorm on top of studying and taking finals and it can be intimidating. There a few simple things you can do in order to minimize this stress on both you and residence life staff.

Students must check out of their room with their resident assistant by Friday evening. Appointments need to be made 24 hours in advance of their check out time.

“It helps if everyone signs up ahead of time with the 24 hour notice, and doesn’t wait until the last moment. Also, having your room completely clean makes it a lot easier so I can move on to the next person and you can head home for the summer,” said Luke Arneson, accounting junior and RA in Wallingford.

All personal belongings must be out of the room before you can complete the check out process. “The process is a lot simpler for everyone if you have all of your stuff out, clean the room, and just have everything ready to go,” said Jamie Grinstaff, athletic training junior and RA in Cole.

There is a possibility of charges and losing your housing deposit if the procedures are not followed. “For instance if you spilled red cool aid on your floor and never told anyone that is a charge. If you destroyed any part of the room, break things, stains on carpets or tiles, or have an improper checkout that is also a charge,” said Jenn Nicholson.

Nicholson emphasized the importance of plans for next year. “If you don’t have housing plans for next year set up yet it is important to contact Sarah Hallinan. If you are not returning to SC next year you need to contact financial aid, turn in your ID card and laptop. Also make sure you have no charges in the library,” said Nicholson.

The women’s golf season has come to an end. The team had its ups and downs but overall the season could be considered successful.

Hannah Mason, physical education sophomore, displayed tremendous success this year. Mason claimed championship honors individually three times this year. Tim Jasper, assistant coach, said winning these was her greatest accomplishment this year.

The first tournament that she won was played at the Winfield Country Club. This tournament closed the Lady Builders Fall season on a positive as the team claimed first. Mason ended the outing with a 36-hole total of 157.

The second time Mason came out on top was also played at the Winfield Country Club. Mason shot a 157 over two rounds and led the team to a fourth place finish.

The third time Mason earned first place was in the Sterling Invitational played at Carey Park in Hutchinson. The team finished third overall. Mason finished with a total of 156 in 36-holes.

Not only does Mason bring success to the team she is also a great asset overall. Alyssa Richardson, professional communication sophomore, is one of Mason’s teammates.

Richardson said, “I feel like Hannah always has a positive attitude about everything in general. Not just her game but everybody’s.”

Richardson and Mason have played competitive golf together since their junior year of high school. Both were graduates of the 2011 class of Andover Central High School.

“We always have a good time, we’ve played together for a long time and Hannah always keeps the mood light and fun” said Richardson.

Mason’s coaches had nothing but good words to say about her. Jasper said, “Her hard work and dedication makes her successful. She brings good chemistry, a hard work ethic and a positive attitude to the team.”

Mason started playing golf with her family when she was younger but never really took it seriously until she got in high school and decided to start playing competitively.

“I feel like I’m a patient player. You see a lot of players when they make a bad shot they get angry and I feel like that doesn’t help, it makes things worse. I try to be calm and let things go,” said Mason about her success.

Along with achievement comes struggle. “I feel like I struggle around the greens and I sometimes battle within myself. Golf is a mental game and you have to be prepared to have bad shots and bad luck,” said Mason.

For Mason, golf is more than just a game. “Golf is a frustrating game but it’s my stress reliever. It’s a game that I can play and have fun.”

Mason said she prefers teeing off over putting, and that the driver is her favorite club to use. “As a kid, that’s the first club I always went to cause it goes the farthest.

The team took a trip to Rome, Ga. last year to compete in the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Invitational hosted by Berry College. The flight down to Georgia was the first time Mason had ever flown in a plane.

“The Coosa Country Club course in Rome, Georgia is my favorite course I’ve ever played on. It was hard, but a nice course,” said Mason.

Next year is already being thought about amongst the team.

Jasper said “Next year we have a great chance of winning regionals and having the team go back to nationals.”

“I’m most excited for the new players to come in while we are still keeping five from this year,” Richardson said.
