Triple overtime game pushes Builders in win

The (6) Southwestern College men’s basketball team won in a triple overtime thriller Wednesday night. The Moundbuilders defeated the bulldogs of McPherson 115-109, at Stewart Field House.

Southwestern (21-2, 14-1) Lajuan Hardy, sophomore guard, went on a career high 35 points shooting 11-25 from the floor. Cameron Hunt, junior guard, added 28 points. Brent Smith, junior center, led the team with 12 rebounds.

The McPherson Bulldogs were led by Aaron Bachura, senior guard, and Garett Owen, sophomore guard, as they each scored 28 points and five rebounds.

Southwestern shot 48 percent from the floor, and 42.1 percent from the three-point range. The Moundbuilders converted 81.8 percent of their free throws and 46 bench points.

The game started with the bulldogs going on an 11-3 run. As both teams started to trade baskets to end the half, McPherson was able to get stops and cut the lead down to 3. The first half ended 43-40, in favor of Southwestern.

Hunt was able to get a basket to push the lead to five 76-71 with 1:34 left. Lual Magot, sophomore forward, of McPherson was able to get a quick basket to make it a three-point game. The bulldogs got a stop on defense and came down for a Bachura three pointer to tie the game to send it to overtime.

To start overtime the McPherson bulldogs went on a 4-0 run. Later into extra time, Hardy hit a three to put up Southwestern up four with one-minute left. Aaron Bachura was able to get a two pointer to make it a two-point game. Owen, hit his free throws sending the game into a double overtime tied at 84.

In double overtime, Cameron hunt scored 11 of Southwestern 14 points. The game still could not be decided in two overtimes, as the teams forced a third overtime.

Hardy was able to come down the floor and make a three point play that excited the crowed. After trading baskets Southwestern was able to pull away with free throws and as time expired Southwestern Moundbuilders won 115-109.

Southwestern College Moundbuilders look to face off this Saturday against York at 2 pm. in York, Nebraska.
