The Lady Builders put up quite a fight against the Saint Mary Spires on Wednesday evening at Stewart Field House. Saint Mary’s ultimately came out on top 3-1.
The Spires won the first set, 25-15; the Lady Builders came back and won the second set, 25-18. The Spires won the next two sets, 25-16, 25-11, defeating the Lady Builders.
Tiana Nice, freshman middle hitter/right side, led the team with ten kills, followed by Lezlee Dixson, freshman middle hitter/right side, with 7 kills. Catabrean Baumann, junior setter, and Kanami Ellis, freshman outside hitter, helped the team out with five kills each.
Colbi Phillips, freshman defensive specialist/libero, led the team with 22 digs. Baumann also led the team with 22 assists.
After the game, Carolina Garbato, head volleyball coach, said “With a losing season it is hard but you can see progress every day,” Garbato continued. “We are a very young team, but there are plays where you can definitely see progress and where everybody has become a better hitter, a better passer, and a better server.”
Rhian Hunter, senior defensive specialist, said that the highs of the game were, “definitely when we had momentum and getting several points,” and the lows were, “getting stuck in serve receive, and defensively not picking up the ball.”
Hunter added “I think we could have capitalized when we had the ball in our possession by making less errors and running more offensive plays.”
The Lady Builders’ next game is Friday, against McPherson at 7 pm in Stewart Field House.
