Softball splits double-header with Bethel

The Lady Builder softball team hosted Bethel College April 21 in games four and five in a three-day period. The two teams split each gaining one victory on the day.
The Threshers came into the game with a 3-20 record after being swept by Bethany College yesterday.

Bethel got on the board first in the top of the first inning. The Lady Builders answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own on an RBI single from Megan Walentynowicz, freshman third baseman.
The Threshers scored another run in the second and again in the fourth.

Kylea Wilson, sophomore shortstop, scored her second run of the game off of an RBI by Shelby Tucker, sophomore utility.

The Builders capitalized on three hits and a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth to take a two run lead.

Bethel answered with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth after three hits and two were hit by pitch.

Southwestern was able to answer batting ten in the bottom of the sixth. With bases loaded and nobody out, Sarah Yzquierdo sophomore utility, drew the walk bringing in a run. Alexis Del Toro, freshman outfielder, followed suit drawing a walk and scoring another run to tie the game.

Devan Howard, junior outfielder, followed up the two straight walks with an RBI single that gave the Builders back the lead.

Sara Blackburn, junior outfielder, got an RBI after drawing a walk to give the Builders a two run lead. Del Toro scored on an RBI single into center by Wilson.

The Builders went into the top of the seventh with a three run lead. Bethel would start their threat with a leadoff walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt. The Threshers scored on a soft one-out single into left, and again on an error.

With runners at first and second and two outs, Del Toro was able to get the final out of the game on a groundout to short.

Walentynowicz led the builders in the first game with her two hit, two RBI performance. Wilson led the team in hits with three.

Rachel Baker, sophomore pitcher, only gave up three earned runs and struck out six.
Blackburn, who came in in the sixth for an inning, got her third win of the year.

The second game of the double header was more of a pitcher’s duel.
The Builders were able to strike first scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Walentynowicz, scoring Howard on the play.

That would be the Builders only run of the day.

Bethel was able to get a run across in the top of the third to tie the game on an RBI single into left.

The Threshers scored twice in the fourth taking the lead on an RBI double followed by an RBI single.

Those were the only two earned runs against Del Toro in the game. Del Toro pitched a complete game giving up 12 hits and two earned runs.

Bethel scored their final run of the day on a sac fly to left, extending the lead to 4-1.

The Builders went down in order in the last frame.

Bethel’s Lakin Thompson, freshman pitcher, only allowed five hits, and gave up no walks on her way to get the win.

Southwestern is back in action on Tuesday in Lindsborg against Bethany College. The Swedes are tied for second in the conference with a 12-4 record in conference play.

The Builders follow that up with their final home games of the year Thursday against the University of Saint Mary.
